YAMA-DERA TEMPLE (山寺) - YAMAGATA
A place of historic interest where MATSUO BASYO has visited.
It is considered as one of the best temples in Tohoku region of Japan. One of its most interesting features is the 1015 steps continuing from the entrance to OKUNOIN (penetralia) on to the top.

The famous Matsuo Basyo's poem
"How still it is here-- Stinging into the stones, The locusts' trill." (閑さや 岩にしみいる 蝉の声) was composed here. It takes 50minutes on foot to the OKUNOIN (penetralia).
