Kyoto (京都) is a prefecture in the Kansai region and is located almost in
the center of Japan's main island of Honshu. Its capital is Kyoto City.
Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a millennium, and carries a reputation as its most beautiful city. However, now that Kyoto is mixed with the modern side and the traditional side of Japan, when you just arrive in you might be disappointed at the first impression of Kyoto city. Some areas don’t have much of the flavor of ancient Kyoto left, and you also find basically whatever you find in Tokyo here. However, take the time to seek it out. You will soon discover Kyoto's hidden beauty and how much there is to see: more than 2000 temples, shrines, dozens of gardens and museums.
It boasts the largest numbers of national treasures, important cultural properties, special historical sites, and places of scenic beauty as of 2003.
