Fast Fact - Hiroshima
Hiroshima is best known for being the first city to suffer an atomic bomb attack - 8:15am, August 6, 1945.Those who are expecting to explore the piles of rubble while, possibly, being affected by radioactivity in Hiroshima city will be in for a surprise; Hiroshima has all the ferroconcrete and blinking neon of any other modern Japanese city. At first glance, it can be hard to imagine that anything out of the ordinary ever happened here.
After the war, great efforts were taken to rebuild the city. Predictions that the city would be uninhabitable proved false. Destroyed monuments of Hiroshima's historical heritage, like Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden, were reconstructed. In the center of the city a large park was built and given a name that would reflect the aspirations of the re-born city: Peace Memorial Park.
Yet, Hiroshima is far from being a depressing place; It is now a modern, cosmopolitan city with a lot of great food and nightlife.
Food wise, Hiroshima is especially famous for oysters and the Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki can be eaten everywhere in Japan, but Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki is different and special.
Even for Japanese travelers, Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki is one of the things they are eager to try in Hiroshima.
